BIOGRAPHY
Nathalie Hidalgo Reyes is a Cuban composer and pianist who believes in the transformative power of music. Her work embraces cultural diversity, and is strongly influenced by styles such as Impressionism, World Music, Jazz and Classical Works. Reyes ' music has been recorded by EGREM Studios and published by the Arts National University (UNA, Argentina) and the University of the Arts of Ecuador (UArtes) as part of the Latin-American Sound Poetics, a work destined to archive the music of Latin American contemporanean composers. Reyes worked in the Department of composition of the University of the Arts (ISA) as Orchestral Score Reading professor.
Known for her curiosity towards the spiritual and for her interest in the multidimensional nature of life, Reyes's music has been awarded at the Harold Gramatges Composition Competition, 2014 (contest promoted by the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, UNEAC); and the Musicalia Composition Contest, 2016. She was also awarded first prize at the Daisy Diaz Paez Piano Competition, 2010.
Reyes participated in music festivals such as the Mostly Modern Festival (Netherlands), the Havana Contemporary Music Festival(Cuba), Musicalia Music Festival and the Electroacoustic Music Festival (held in the University of the Arts).
Her piano music has been performed and recorded by Rachel del Toro at San Felipe Neri Oratory(Cuba), Lianne Vega at the Comfandi Cultural Center(Colombia), and Lisa Maria Blanco at Codarts Rotterdam(Netherlands). Chamber music is an important part of her international career. Recently one of her string works has been premiered and recorded by the Dior string quartet in the Zeeuwse Concertzaal (Middelburg-Zeeland). Her piece Trio to a Quartet without strings was premiered by Crisantemi String Quartet at the University of the Arts, (ISA). .
Some of her Orchestral pieces' premieres include the OSO(Eastern Symphonic Orchestra, Cuba), La Gran Siete (Spain) and the Chamber ensemble from the University of Arts, Cuba.
Nathalie defines herself in a constant state of curiosity, finding herself involved in poetry, painting, photography or filmmaking, so she has collaborated with film music having under her name the score of a short film commissioned by the cuban film director Neftalí Pupo Reynaldo. She participated in a Music Film Composition Workshop led by the Austrian composer, music producer and composition professor, Walter Wezowa.
Her christian faith has been a great influence in her work, and a core to her voice as a composer. In 2016, moved by her beliefs, Reyes started to work on a project that relates music and physics, approaching the analysis of biological and psychological responses to sound, having as precept the sound as beginning of life.
Currently Reyes is working alongside the Yemeni writer Dhuha Awad on a project that entangles music and poetry. She is also working on her own poetry book which is meant to be published by 2025.
Hidalgo Reyes, originally from Cuba(Las Tunas) showed from an early age interest in the arts: painting, creative writing and music. In spite of the fact that she didn't grow up in an artistic environment, her parents encouraged her to pursue her creative vocation. Soon enough she fell in love with piano, and later on established a career as a piano player, having a bachelor in this degree.
A student of Maestro Juan Piñera Infante, Nathalie graduated with honors from the University of Arts in Havana, Cuba, where she earned a bachelor's degree in music composition. She also received the title of best teaching assistant alumni of the year. In 2023 she obtained a Diploma in Neuropsychology applied to education from the Superior Institute of Psychological Studies (ISEP - Madrid).
Since 2021 Hidalgo resides in the United Arab Emirates where she works as piano and music theory professor.
